The Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island Referral Center and Emergency Hospital in West Islip, NY is recruiting an additional internship trained Emergency Clinician. Works closely with: Chief of ER, Client Care Coordinators, Clinicians, LVT's, Hospital Administrator, Owners, as well as all ER staff and personnel alike.

Position Purpose

The Emergency Clinician is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the emergency service and the communication between ER service and the RDVM community. This position additionally mentors the Emergency personnel and the annual interns within the facility. Furthermore, assists in the direction of all ER personnel and Intern education under the advisement and direction of the Chief of Emergency. This position will coordinate the ER cases and the transfer of cases to the appropriate VMCLI departments. This position will play an instrumental role in staff education including but not limited to ER protocols, lectures post continuing education events, and demonstrations of systems and protocols within the ER department to help educate and train the ER interns and personnel as requested by the Chief of Emergency. Additionally, you are responsible for monitoring ER expenses and charges with the ER department amongst the interns and LVT's for accuracy and report any discrepncies to the Chief of ER. This individual will assess and maintain accountability of all ER standards of operation and invoicing while working in the ER department and respond to the direction and guidelines set forth by the Chief of ER, HA, Chief of Staff, and Owners. This position will require the individual to maintain a highly organized and regimented work environment to balance their clinical duties with the intricacies of an ER caseload.   • General healthcare, diagnostics and treatment for animals in our facilities in accordance with the practice Vision, mission, and values.
  • Performing exams and rechecks on animals.
  • Performing surgery as necessary.
  • Leading, directing, and training staff, ER personnel, and Interns in animal care and ER protocols as instituted by the Chief of ER.
  • Participation in outreach and educational efforts is also required, including working with and directing the intern classes.
  • Participation in educational events held for the community.
  • Supervisory work will be required

Professionalism and Customer Service

  • During your shift, you are required to oversee the ER department and needed responses to client concerns, complaints and praise in a fashion consistent with VMCLI codes of professional conduct and keep informed the Chief of ER. Involve the Customer Service Supervisor in all areas of client service relations when appropriate.
  • Maintain an enthusiastic and energetic working environment that fosters positivity and aids in the advancement of the facility, its personnel, and the patient care standards we seek to provide.
  • Maintain exemplary customer service standards that are consistent and conveys to the community and referring veterinarians a level of service that is respected and is of a high quality.
  • Ensure and maintain proper procedures are followed in relation to all referring veterinarians.
  • Provide consistent and effective communication to our clinicians and specialties regarding department cases.
  • Foster and ensure long-term relationships with all of our referring veterinarians by following the guidelines set forth by the Chief of ER.

Supervisory Requirements

  • In cooperation with the Chief of ER, oversee orientation and performance of all ER staff actions during your shift. Report any praises or necessary correction to the pertinent supervisory staff.
  • Assist in monitoring staffing performance to assure maximum productivity and service within the ER.
  • Maintain the highest standards of job performance, professional behavior, conduct, and follow policy as dictated by the Chief of ER.
  • Assists in Mediation of all ER personnel problems and maintain an ER environment that motivates employees
  • Delegate responsibilities to the ER staff and interns as needed to facilitate high quality patient care and operations.
  • Perform, Consult, and maintain the highest standards of medicine according to the policy and procedures outlined by Chief of ER.
  • Aid in the development of opportunities for in-house and off-site continuing education for all ER clinicians and staff.
  • Assist, promote, and provide support to ER personnel in all areas of the ER department.


  • Endeavor to maintain professional departmental interactions at all times that will foster positive relationships among all staff and the facility as a whole.
  • Act as a mentor to the staff in areas of technical proficiency and lead by example


  • Facilitate the flow of communication between departments
  • Maintain medical care standards in conjunction with the clinicians and staff within the ER and the facility as a whole.
  • Adhere to all ER financial policies and guidelines.

  • Ensure proper maintenance and use of all VMCLI equipment.


  • Ideal candidates have 2-4 years experience as an ER Veterinarian.
  • 1-2 years of leadership experience within an ER service.
  • NYS veterinary license
  • A strong desire to contribute to fostering long-term relationships between animals and people within an ER setting.

Special Position Requirements/Physical Requirements

In addition, the Emergency Clinician will work closely with the Chief of ER in assisting with the goals for the ER and its growth. Additionally, assist in the establishment of medical protocols and implementing them under direction Chief of ER.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
